Earn reputation, not limelight!

In the 2007 men's T20 World Cup final, Gautam Gambhir top scored in India's modest total of 157 runs. India won the match and the trophy, but GG wasn't the Man of the Match. Cut to 2011, GG once again top scored with 97 runs in India's successful heist of 275 runs against Sri Lanka in the men's 50-over World Cup final. He wasn't the MoM this time either.

Not only these marquee finals, GG played a very important hand in many a famous win for India's men's cricket team during his career that spanned more than a decade. He never hogged the limelight like many of the superstar cricketers of his time did, but silently he did his job and with great success. He did that in recent years too as mentor of IPL teams, which eventually earned him the cap of India's men's cricket team's Head Coach.

A similar journey that I have seen in my professional life is that of Rituparna Dutta Roy, my ex-colleague at Netscribes. As she completes 9 years at Netscribes, I can't help but draw this comparison with GG. Ritu has never been in the limelight like many of her peers, but silently she has done her job and emerged as one of the most dependable managers who can tackle tough situations, difficult clients, and tight-deadline critical deliveries successfully. She speaks her mind (much like our firebrand GG), which doesn't make her very popular among coworkers, but end of the day it is people like her who are needed to crack tricky deals!

Therefore, it is probably safe to say that ones who earn reputation and goodwill through their work and performance make a bigger impact than those who hog the limelight based on popularity!
