SKY catch - quick, right, and lucky!
It’s been around 10 days that we have seen a lot of posts on social media regarding Suryakumar Yadav’s catch of David Miller in the T20 Men’s World Cup Cricket final at Kensington Oval, Barbados. The catch proved to be a decisive factor in India’s world cup win that day but the debates continue whether the catch was legal or not.
In the context of this, a few things passed my mind which I thought of sharing:
Decision-making: It took SKY micro seconds to see where the nearest fielder (Rohit Sharma) is and decide that he has to run and take the catch himself. This reinstates the importance of taking the right decision at critical times, and that too promptly.
Stakeholder Approval: The catch was reviewed and confirmed to be a legal one by the third umpire Richard Kettleborough (who had been considered unlucky till then in India’s knockout matches). There can’t be a question of biasness here. This reminds us that you need to execute the task assigned to you accurately for the stakeholders to review and approve it.
Luck and Destiny: Throwback to the T20 Men’s World Cup Cricket semi-final at Wankhede stadium, Mumbai. In the 18th over of their chase to overtake India’s total of 192, West Indies needed 32 runs of only 15 runs. The first 3 deliveries of that over were dots by Jasprit Bumrah (the man with the magic hand in the 2024 T20 WC). However, luck was going West Indies’ way in this match as twice their batters had got a life after getting out to No Balls! But a drama similar to SKY’s recent catch unfolded when the batsman on strike, Lendi Simmons, attempted hitting a six of the 4th delivery of the 18th over. Virat Kohli took the rebound catch after Ravindra Jadeja lobbed the ball to him while taking the catch at the boundary rope and the stadium erupted in joy. But it was short-lived as the third umpire review confirmed that Jadeja’s foot touched the boundary rope when the ball was in his hand. It was confirmed to be a six and West Indies went on to win the match (and eventually the tournament that year). In a similar situation in 2024 T20 WC final, luck was on India’s side and hence it was a catch and not a six. This again shows that in every aspect of life, luck does play a very important role. And of course, there are days when you are destined to do well, and luck will be your side on those days, no matter what impediments come your way!
