Think smart like SKY to win deals!

Image
Earlier this month, I had written a post that delved on Surya Kumar Yadav's spectacular catch in the men's T20 Cricket World Cup final, which played a crucial role in India winning the trophy. That glorious moment has probably triggered a purple patch for SKY. Around 3 weeks after India won the World Cup (which also saw India’s full-time captain Rohit Sharma retiring from T20I cricket), SKY was made India’s men’s T20 cricket team’s new captain for the series against Sri Lanka. Roughly 2 weeks later, he led India to a 3-0 clean sweep against Sri Lanka in the T20I series that concluded last night. Winning and losing is all part of the game and that is not the point of discussion here. What caught everyone’s attention in the T20I series against Sri Lanka are some aspects of SKY’s captaincy. Let’s look at those aspects and understand how these are applicable in our daily work life as well: Risk-taking: In competitive sports, success follows the brave, and the brave ones are tho...

Earn reputation, not limelight!

In the 2007 men's T20 World Cup final, Gautam Gambhir top scored in India's modest total of 157 runs. India won the match and the trophy, but GG wasn't the Man of the Match. Cut to 2011, GG once again top scored with 97 runs in India's successful heist of 275 runs against Sri Lanka in the men's 50-over World Cup final. He wasn't the MoM this time either. Not only these marquee finals, GG played a very important hand in many a famous win for India's men's cricket team during his career that spanned more than a decade. He never hogged the limelight like many of the superstar cricketers of his time did, but silently he did his job and with great success. He did that in recent years too as mentor of IPL teams, which eventually earned him the cap of India's men's cricket team's Head Coach. A similar journey that I have seen in my professional life is that of Rituparna Dutta Roy , my ex-colleague at Netscribes . As she completes 9 years at Netscr...

People remember winners only!

Between the years 1983 and 2023, India’s men’s cricket team reached the last 4 and beyond in as many as 20 ICC tournaments. This includes 8 times in 50-over World Cup , out of which they won the trophy twice (1983 and 2011), finished second best twice (2003 and 2023), and bowed out in the semifinals on four occasions (1987, 1996, 2015 and 2019). In the Champions Trophy (earlier known as ICC Knockout), they won it twice (2002 – jointly with Sri Lanka, and 2013), were runners up twice (2000 and 2017), and lost in semifinals once (1998). In T20 World Cup , India lifted the trophy twice (2007 and 2024), lost the final once (2014), and could not proceed beyond final four twice (2016 and 2022). As for the two editions of the World Test Championship ( WTC ), India made it to the finals on both occasions (2021 and 2023) but failed to win each time. So out of a total of 20 attempts, India won the title only on six occasions. The other 14 occasions involved several great cricketing heroes of ...

SKY catch - quick, right, and lucky!

It’s been around 10 days that we have seen a lot of posts on social media regarding Suryakumar Yadav’s catch of David Miller in the T20 Men’s World Cup Cricket final at Kensington Oval, Barbados. The catch proved to be a decisive factor in India’s world cup win that day but the debates continue whether the catch was legal or not.                                                                                                     In the context of this, a few things passed my mind which I thought of sharing: Decision-making : It took SKY micro seconds to see where the nearest fielder (Rohit Sharma) is and decide that he has to run and take the catch himself. This reinstates the importance of taking the right decision at critical times, a...
